If there's any truth to the notion that either Hurricane Katrina or 9/11 were punishments visited upon America for her sins, then the sin in question was, in both cases, allowing a clueless, spineless bully like George W. Bush to become president. 2005. 2001. I wonder if he's fiddling with the locks at Versailles as we speak.

If that were the case, we'd be seeing the bloated bodies of greedy energy-company executives rotting in the streets of their exclusive gated communities, rather than poor people dead in the neighborhoods neglected by said clueless spineless bully and his friends.

No, it's our fault, rich and poor alike, liberal and conservative alike, religious and atheist alike, Republican and Democrat alike, white, black, and every other color alike. It's not fair that it's by and large the poor of New Orleans paying the price this time around, but it was all of us who let him become president. A spineless bully's friends only do what the rest of us allow them to do.

You're right. If we're not in the circle around the fight egging the bully on, we're somewhere else, keeping our heads down and being thankful the bully's not picking on us. This time.

Yeah, and I don't know what to do about it. I mean, there must be something that can be done, but the not knowing is disheartening and paralyzing.

I'm talking to my relatives in Utah, collating links, and trying to get them to understand that at the very least, Brown and Chertoff need to be held fully responsible for this disaster. I also point out that the guy they voted for, Mr. Bush, is totally responsible for their appointment.

So far at least one of my sisters is writing to her congressman (whose campaign we worked on as teenagers) to demand that they get the axe, and replaced with either Giuliani or James Witt. Dunno about the rest of my family. It takes time to tell them that their favourite cricket team really sucks at running the country, without them feeling personally attacked. (Sure, it would be nice to let loose with the vitriol, but frankly, I think it would be counter-productive. What Bush needs to see right now is a lot of pissed off Republicans. He already knows about the pissed off Dems. I'm working on it slowly, but hopefully surely.)

In other news, I think I'm going to find at least one thing I can volunteer for at a local level, and try and find some rallies to go to.

Not wishing to knock your duly elected leader in any way but i still keep expecting to see him on CNN announcing...

'My fellow Americans, the war on weather has begun'

LOL. Then we'd have to watch the mad rush of Democrats dissociating themselves from weather at all costs.

Of course, Shrub being so Shrublike, he'd declare a War On Hurricanes, buy millions of dollars of overpriced and underperforming boats from Halliburton, sail around the Gulf Of Mexico for two months, not find any hurricanes, and then send a flunky to the UN with a powerpoint linking Fidel Castro to Hurricane Katrina. Then he'd declare war on Cuba.
