I am confirmed as a program participant for L.A.con IV, the 64th World Science Fiction Convention. I don't know yet what I'll be doing on the program, but I will be at the con in Anaheim all five days, from August 23rd to 27th. I hope you will be too. (A lot of people don't like L.A. much, but I love it, as only someone who moved far away as a young child can.)

As a program participant, I get complimentary memberships for me and my wife. But since I had purchased one before getting added to program, I now have one Worldcon membership for sale. It can be yours for $175, which is exactly what I paid for it.

UPDATE:  The membership is tentatively spoken for. If this changes, I will post about it again.

We've totally got to hang out! (When I'm not stuck behind that fucking table for seven hours at at time.)

Yes, and when I'm not doing the 7 or 8 panels I said they could put me on! Eek! What was I thinking?

For me WorldCons are never as fun as Nebula weekends. Trevor and I get to see the inside of a convention center during the daylight hours when the rest of the staff is having a good time "working," and, at night, as long as I can stay awake, I try to explore whatever city we're in. It sucks!

This year I was smart enough to make my vacation the week before WorldCon, though, so I'll have time to screw around in LA with Bianca before I get stuck in the hotel/con center.

Excellent! So you'll have scoped out all the great hangs!

We're making a ten-day pilgrimage through San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur, and, finally, LA.

The Con is actually in Anaheim, right? Is that so close to LA that it might as well be LA?

It's Orange County, but it's still close enough that they can get away with calling it L.A.con. At least, when the traffic's good. It's, like, half an hour from LAX. At least, when the traffic's good.

That's excellent. We actually did a five day jaunt through CA from LA to Napa/Sonoma and it was a lot of fun. I think our best trips are when we explore.

There's a very small chance that I might end up going. But it's very small. Miniscule. I'm hoping to be in Australia instead. But if that falls through, I might end up in CA, so I'll try to check out the panels and swing by the table.

I was just talking to Shana about heading out there for this (I'm going to be in California a lot this summer working on various sites out there), so tentatively sign me up for that ticket. Is registration still open to get her one?

Hey, cool! Registration will be open for a good long time, and I don't think this con has a membership limit. I'll hang onto the membership until you know for sure.

The registration info is here (http://www.laconiv.org/2006/reg/reg.htm). Prices for a full membership could go up after July 1st, but there are also one-day and "taster" memberships available.

And, of course, the con also has a LiveJournal community at [livejournal.com profile] laconiv.

I love the new "taster" membership option.

Mister Bieniowski, your taster membership allows you to view two (2) overweight bellydancers, eight (8) frustrated furry fans, one (1) overcrowded SFWA suite with visible humidity, and comes with a ticket to the dealers' room that allows one (1) overpriced first edition to be purchased at a 10 percent discount.

And don't forget to tip your con staff.

LACon is giving free memberships to program participants in advance? As opposed to the usual practice of refunding program-participants' memberships after the con if they have enough surplus? Are you sure about this?

What it said in the invitation I received seemed straightforward enough:

"In keeping with L.A.con's tradition, we will provide a complimentary membership in the convention for each invited program participant and for one guest."

Though I will ask for clarification.

That does seem straightforward. Okay then.

I love visiting LA, although I'm not sure I could live there. The O.C., on the other hand...I dunno.

Visiting is where it's at. For living, I prefer a nice public-transit city.
