Eden M. Robins As announced at our November 5th edition, we'll have a new co-host soon joining the Tuesday Funk family. We're pleased to introduce Eden Robins!

Eden is a great friend and supporter of Tuesday Funk who has read for us on at least three occasions in the past, including going above and beyond the call of duty on the night of our infamous February blizzard. She's had some short stories published in magazines that are now defunct, as well as magazines that are still up and running. She is the founding editor of the online semiprozine Brain Harvest, also defunct, and is currently writing her second novel, a weird Western. For money, Eden makes what are essentially Choose Your Own Adventure websites that teach people about health insurance, but she's spent most of her adult life trying to sell you dildos. Eden horrifies writers everywhere with her unabashed hatred of cats. She has a website, too.

"I think the top goal is to entertain," Eden says of her coming Tuesday Funk tenure. "There are a bazillion reading series in Chicago to choose from, and as much as I love stories and essays, one has to admit that it's not always the most compelling live show. I think the role of the hosts is to keep the audience entertained and coming back every month and to pick a variety of writing styles so that the readings stay fresh and interesting, and so there's more to the audience than a rotating group of cliques that come to see their friend and then leave."

Warming our hearts, she goes on to say, "I just love Tuesday Funk and I want to see it get even more awesome!"

Please join us at Hopleaf on January 7, 2014, when Eden makes her awesome debut as a co-host with Andrew Huff. And please come out to our next event on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, which features readings from G.P.A. (Greatest Poet Alive), Jocelyn Geboy, Davis Schneiderman, J. Michael Grey, and—in his final appearance as a Tuesday Funk co-host—William Shunn! You won't want to miss it!

Vojislav Pejović reads at Tuesday Funk #63 The folks lucky enough to have squeezed into the upstairs lounge at Hopleaf for our November 5th edition of Tuesday Funk know what a fantastic time was had by all. But if you weren't there, let us break down the awesomeness for you.

We kicked things off with Rosamund Lannin, who took us trick-or-treating in the Castro of San Francisco. John Rich then hauled us up to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to visit a local dive bar. Co-host Andrew Huff brought us topical haiku appropriate to the season. And returning reader J.H. Palmer spirited us to Texas for a guided tour of Lee Harvey Oswald's Dallas.

After a break for beer from Mark at the bar, co-host William Shunn brought us a new poem about trees and clapping or something. Next, Vojislav Pejović took us overseas to Belgrade for a look at a student and a nation rearranging themselves. And finally, Paul McComas and Greg Starrett donned costumes to unravel for us the mystery of Frankenstein's fine suit—a mystery we didn't even know needed solving!

Not only that, but we introduced you to our new co-host, who'll be taking over from Bill in January—the multi-talented Eden Robins. She proved her worth by rising to the challenge of introducing one of our more hard-to-pronounce guests like so:

That's what you missed out on, but never fear! We'll bring you plenty of video excerpts in the weeks to come, and then we'll be back on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013, for an evening with G.P.A. (Greatest Poet Alive), Jocelyn Geboy, Davis Schneiderman, J. Michael Grey, and—in his final appearance as a Tuesday Funk co-host—William Shunn! Please don't dream of missing it!

miltrosenberg.jpg Hey, Funkers! Our co-host William Shunn will be appearing tonight with Roosevelt University's Gary K. Wolfe on "Extension 720 with Milt Rosenberg" on WGN Radio 720 AM. They'll be talking about science fiction—particularly today's release of the Library of America's new collection, American Science Fiction: Nine Classic Novels of the 1950s, which Mr. Wolfe edited.

Milt Rosenberg's show has run since 1973, during which time he's talked with an intimidating array of world leaders, prominent academics, and entertainment figures. Tonight's program airs live from 10 p.m. to midnight. You can also listen online, or a podcast of the discussion will be available in a few days. We hope you'll tune in!

(And for more information about the collection, please visit the American Science Fiction companion site, which Gary curated.)

A few weeks ago, Andrew Huff of Gapers Block issued a fascinating challenge to Tuesday Funk co-host William Shunn: to take a piece of original poster art by Chad Kouri and produce a piece of writing of between 1,500 and 2,500 words to accompany it.

The resulting art/writing combo, along with seven other collaborations between artists and writers, will be on display and on sale at The Coop on May 18th. All the info is below. Hope to see you there, Funkers!

William Shunn and the Curse of the Second Pyramid You know William Shunn as a co-host of Tuesday Funk, the guy who does those wacky poems every month. But he's also a blogger, a podcaster, a programmer, a designer, an inventor, a collector, a cabinetmaker, a bowler, a moviegoer, a foodie, a traveler, a tinkerer, a priest, an atheist, a curmudgeon, a felon, a photographer, a chauffeur, a skeptic, a rube, a ruffian, a layabout, a lurker, a dilettante, a poseur, a pundit, a primate, an ancestor, an earthling, an alien, a canvas, a convenience, an improvisation, an illusion, and occasionally a writer. His latest project is a young-adult science fiction novel which currently goes by the name Waking Vishnu, and which you can read a very brief snippet from here. He also wishes you would bug him more about going to the gym.

Please join us to hear Bill read an actual short story on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at 7:30 pm in Hopleaf's upstairs bar, together with our great lineup of Stephen Markley, Lawrence Santoro, Holly McDowell, and Christopher Sweet!

We just want to give you a quick heads-up that your Tuesday Funk co-host William Shunn will be appearing as part of the Essay Fiesta reading series at The Book Cellar in Lincoln Square this coming Monday, December 19th, at 7:00 pm.

It'll be Bill's third time reading at Essay Fiesta, a monthly charitable reading series that benefits 826CHI, a non-profit writing and tutoring program here in Chicago, and he's very excited to be asked back. Hosts Alyson Lyon and Keith Ecker (both of whom have read for us at the Funk) do a fantastic job of putting together a great program every month. Also appearing on Monday will be Dana Norris, J.H. Palmer, Jennifer Bosworth, and Eric Bjorlin. Please turn out and support the whole gang.

The Book Cellar, we should mention, is a wonderful place for a reading. It's a lovely independent bookstore and café, with beer, wine, and coffee available during their events. The reading itself is free, with fun prizes raffled and donation accepted on behalf of 826CHI. Show up early to be sure of a seat.

Last time Bill read at Essay Fiesta, back in April 2010, it looked and sounded something like this:

Hey, Funkers, there's still time to bid in the auction we told you about yesterday afternoon. You have a little over eight hours left to get a bid in if you want to be one of the first by far to own a physical copy of my memoir The Accidental Terrorist. Two of the three books have definitely sold so far, and the third could possibly be yours for a minimum bid of just $100!

If you still want to learn more about The Accidental Terrorist, the indefatigable Dave Slusher interviewed me about it way back when for his Reality Break podcast. Take a listen:

shunn-accidental.jpg Hi, generous Tuesday Funk fans! You may not be familiar with the name Terri Windling, but she is a major figure in the fantasy publishing world, as an author, illustrator, and especially editor. Health and legal issues have drained the Terri and her family of all financial resources, so the SF/fantasy community is doing what the SF/fantasy community does—banding together to help.

And they're helping by raising money with an online auction called Magick 4 Terri. Literally dozens of publishing professionals—people like Jane Yolen, Cory Doctorow, Holly Black, Ellen Kushner, Charles Vess, Barry Goldblatt—have contributed rare goods and services to be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Your humble Tuesday Funk co-host has a slate of items up for auction, too—three signed, privately printed copies of my not-yet-published memoir The Accidental Terrorist. You might have heard me read from it on several occasions at past Funk episodes. The manuscript is making the rounds of editors' desks as we speak, but there's a way you, generous Funker, can lay hands on a copy well before anyone else.

All you have to do is bid.

The bidding starts at $100. The three highest bidders walk away with the books, and will also be mentioned the acknowledgment when a commercial edition finally comes out. The bidding has already begun, so what are you waiting for?

Oh, one more thing. The auction closes at 5:00 pm PST on Thursday, December 15th. That gives you just a little over 24 hours to get your bids in. Help Terri Windling, and don't delay. Bid now!

(Click here for more information about the bidding process.)

If you're curious to know more about The Accidental Terrorist, I did an interview about it on Air America back in 2009, when I was serializing an earlier draft as a weekly podcast. Listen to both segments of the interview below:

100MEDIA_IMAG1860.jpg Tuesday Funk is pleased to announce the announcement by co-host Sara Ross Witt that she and Andrew Witt have welcomed Seamus Arthur Witt into this world. Seamus was born on November 17, and weighed in at 7 lbs 5 oz. All involved are doing well, though Seamus has sent us a note requesting that his mom be excused from hosting duties at Tuesday Funk for the month of December. We think that's fair, and look forward to seeing Sara at the mic again in 2012.

Congratulations to Sara, Andy, and Seamus!

This weekend, our co-host William Shunn appears on the public-affairs program Senior Network on CAN TV 19, as part of a panel discussion on contemporary science fiction novels and films. The panel also includes Jody Lynn Nye and Edison Blake, and is hosted by Dr. Bob Blackwood.

CAN TV is a Chicago public-access cable network with five separate channels. The episode will air on Channel 19 on Friday, April 8, at 5 pm, and then again on Sunday, April 10, at noon (though we're not sure whether Bill's half-hour will air in the first or second half of the hour). If you get CAN TV 19, please tune in!

Hi, everyone. My name is William Shunn, and I'm one of the new co-producers of Tuesday Funk. If you're reading this, you've probably already noticed our spiffy new web site. I'd like to tell you about some of the other changes afoot.

Tuesday Funk has been one of the most exciting and unpredictable reading series in Chicago since its founding in early 2008. We've featured wild-eyed poets, lark-tongued troubadours, and more excellent fiction, verse, and essays read live than you could shake a blue pencil at. I'm fortunate enough to have been asked to read for the series four times in the past couple of years myself, and I'm proud to have been considered an adjunct member of the Tuesday Funk family.

Connor Coyne, Reinhardt Suarez and Hallie Palladino of the Gothic Funk Nation have run Tuesday Funk with scary efficiency since 2008. I'm very pleased and more than a little humbled to now be co-producing together with Sara Ross (whose entry into the family was announced in July). Sara and I hope to keep the same great mix of genres and disciplines that has made the series so much fun in the past, while throwing in some curve balls to keep things fresh and interesting. We have some big shoes to fill.

While I never want the series to get away from its roots as a showcase for Chicago writers, I'd love to bring more out-of-towners into the mix too. So if you're a writer (or something similar) and plan to be in Chicago the first week of any given month, please drop us a line and we'll see if we have room for you. We'd love to have you. (Email us at tuesdayfunkchicago@gmail.com.)

Oh, another thing. Chicagoans, please mark your calendars for our next reading on Tuesday, October 5, 7:30 pm, at Hopleaf. We'll have Jackie Adamski and Gothic Funk/Tuesday Funk founder Connor Coyne with us that night, and I'll be batting cleanup with my fifth appearance as a Tuesday Funk reader. But most importantly we need to keep our attendance high so we can continue using Hopleaf's upstairs bar month after month. More reminders will follow, but we hope to see you there.

We also have a new Facebook page. Please drop by and "like" Tuesday Funk. And watch for Sara and me to tell you more about ourselves and our upcoming readers over the next several days.

Finally, thanks to Hallie and Reinhardt and especially Connor for all their hard, often thankless work, for their continued input and advice, and for entrusting us with their baby. For all that things may be changing, and for all that we'll make mistakes along the way, we hope to keep the high quality of the Tuesday Funk the same. Thanks, Gothic Funk Nation, for letting us be citizens.
